What is the standard distance of the Epsom Derby?

The story behind the answer

The standard distance of the Epsom Derby is 1 mile, 4 furlongs and 10 yards.

That distance is approximately 2,420 metres. The race is run on Epsom Downs in Surrey and is one of Britain’s five Classic races for Thoroughbreds aged three.

The Epsom Derby is traditionally held on the first Saturday of June. Its course begins with a run toward Tattenham Corner, followed by a demanding turn and an uphill finish that tests both speed and stamina.

The race is commonly called the Derby in Britain, while “Epsom Derby” helps distinguish it from other races using the Derby name. It should not be confused with the Kentucky Derby, which is run over 1¼ miles.
