What is the smallest bird in the world?

The story behind the answer

The bee hummingbird is the smallest living bird, measuring about 5.5 centimetres long in males and weighing roughly 1.95 grams. Females are slightly larger, averaging about 6.1 centimetres and 2.6 grams.

This tiny hummingbird is endemic to Cuba, where it feeds mainly on flower nectar and also catches small insects. Like other hummingbirds, it can hover while feeding, and its wings beat extraordinarily quickly—around 80 to 200 times per second.

Anna’s, rufous, and ruby-throated hummingbirds are all small, but they are noticeably larger than the bee hummingbird. Its eggs are only about the size of coffee beans, yet the species remains an active pollinator and may visit as many as 1,500 flowers in a day.
