The Sindarin name for Rivendell in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium is Imladris.
Rivendell is the English rendering commonly used in The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, while Imladris is its name in Sindarin, one of Tolkien’s Elvish languages. The name is associated with the valley where Elrond maintains his refuge in the eastern part of Eriador.
The settlement was founded by Elrond in the Second Age after the destruction of Eregion. It became a refuge for Elves and other enemies of Sauron, and later served as an important meeting place in the history of the One Ring. Frodo Baggins recovers there after being wounded by a Nazgûl.
Imladris should not be confused with Lothlórien, the Elven realm ruled by Galadriel and Celeborn. Nor is Rivendell a city such as Minas Tirith; Tolkien describes it primarily as a hidden valley and refuge.
