What is the Sindarin name for Mount Doom in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium?

The story behind the answer

The Sindarin name for Mount Doom in J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendarium is Orodruin.

Orodruin is the volcanic mountain in Mordor where Sauron forged the One Ring. Its Sindarin name means “Mountain of Blazing Fire,” fitting its role as the only place where the Ring can be destroyed. Tolkien also uses the name Amon Amarth, meaning “Mount Doom.”

The mountain is central to The Lord of the Rings because the Ring’s destruction requires its return to the fires where it was made. Frodo and Sam reach the Cracks of Doom with Gollum’s help and conflict. “Orodruin” should not be confused with Mount Gundabad or the Misty Mountains, which are separate locations in Tolkien’s geography.
