What is the scientific name of the tiger barb, a striped freshwater aquarium fish?
Answer
Puntigrus tetrazona
Answer
Puntigrus tetrazona
The scientific name of the tiger barb is Puntigrus tetrazona.
Tiger barbs are small freshwater cyprinids native to parts of Southeast Asia, including rivers and streams on the Malay Peninsula, Sumatra, and Borneo. Their yellow-orange body and dark vertical bands give them their common name.
The species was historically placed in the genus Puntius, and many older aquarium references still use the name Puntius tetrazona. Modern classifications place it in Puntigrus, so both names may appear in books and databases, but Puntigrus tetrazona is the current scientific combination commonly used.
Tiger barbs are active schooling fish. In small groups they may nip the fins of slower tankmates, while larger groups can spread that behavior among themselves. They are therefore best kept with similarly active fish.
