What is the region of Pokémon Red and Blue?

The story behind the answer

The region of Pokémon Red and Blue is Kanto. It is the first major region introduced in the Pokémon video-game series and serves as the setting for the original 151 Pokémon adventure.

Kanto includes Pallet Town, Viridian City, Pewter City, Cerulean City, Lavender Town, Celadon City, Fuchsia City, Saffron City, Cinnabar Island and the Indigo Plateau. Players travel between these locations along Routes, exploring caves, forests, islands and oceans while collecting Pokémon and challenging eight Gym Leaders.

The region is inspired by Japan’s real Kantō region, which includes Tokyo and surrounding areas on Honshu. The Pokémon version is fictional, however, and its geography, cities and landmarks are designed for the game’s story and exploration. Kanto later reappeared in Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal, where it could be visited after completing the main journey.

A common mix-up is confusing Kanto with Johto, the neighboring region featured in the second-generation games. Pokémon Red and Blue focus on Kanto, while Johto appears in Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal.
