What is the only continent that has never had a confirmed tornado?

The only continent with no confirmed tornado is Antarctica. Tornadoes have been documented on every other continent, although global records are much less complete outside the United States and a few other well-monitored regions.

Antarctica’s extreme cold and dryness make the ingredients for ordinary tornado-producing thunderstorms exceptionally rare. Tornadoes typically need warm, moist, unstable air and strong changes in wind speed or direction with height. Antarctica’s interior is dominated by an intensely cold, dry atmosphere, while its sparse population makes sightings and damage reports less likely.

“Never had a confirmed tornado” is more precise than saying a tornado is impossible there. A brief vortex could theoretically occur, especially near the relatively milder Antarctic coast, but no event has been verified as a tornado in the continent’s historical record. The statement also does not mean Antarctica lacks dangerous rotating winds: blizzards and katabatic winds can be extremely powerful, but they are different weather phenomena.
