Answer
8,848.86 metres
The official height of Mount Everest measured in 2020 is 8,848.86 metres.
China and Nepal announced this jointly surveyed elevation in December 2020. The figure includes the mountain’s snow and ice cap, whose thickness can change over time. Earlier official measurements differed partly because survey methods, reference systems, and treatment of the summit snow varied.
Mount Everest is in the Himalayas on the border between Nepal and the Tibet Autonomous Region of China. In Nepal it is called Sagarmatha, while in Tibet it is known as Chomolungma. The English name honours George Everest, a nineteenth-century Surveyor General of India, although he did not personally see the mountain.
The first confirmed ascent was made in 1953 by New Zealand climber Edmund Hillary and Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay. Everest remains a demanding climb because of extreme altitude, low oxygen, severe weather, and avalanche danger.
