The official height of Mount Everest jointly announced by Nepal and China in 2020 is 8,848.86 metres above sea level.
Nepal and China announced the new figure on 8 December 2020 after separate surveys and a joint agreement. The measurement includes the mountain’s snow and ice cap, rather than attempting to identify only the rock beneath it. Earlier widely used figures included 8,848 metres and China’s 8,844.43-metre rock-height measurement.
Everest is part of the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas, on the Nepal–China border. It was named in English after George Everest, a former Surveyor General of India, although the mountain has older local names, including Sagarmatha in Nepal and Qomolangma in Tibet.
