What is the official English name of Mongolia’s capital city?

The story behind the answer

Ulaanbaatar is the capital and largest city of Mongolia.

The city was founded in 1639 as a mobile monastic center called Örgöö. It moved many times before settling at its present location beside the Tuul River in 1778. Its modern name, Ulaanbaatar, means “Red Hero” in Mongolian and was adopted in 1924.

Ulaanbaatar lies in north-central Mongolia at an elevation of roughly 1,300 metres. It is the country’s political, economic, cultural, and transportation center, and it contains a large share of Mongolia’s population.

The city is sometimes written as Ulan Bator in older English sources, but Ulaanbaatar is the standard modern transliteration. It should not be confused with Astana, Bishkek, or Tashkent, which are capitals of Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan.
