Mount Everest’s official elevation is 8,848.86 metres according to the 2020 Nepal–China measurement.
Nepal and China announced the jointly surveyed height on 8 December 2020. The figure measures the summit’s rock height plus its permanent snow and ice cap. Nepal’s earlier official figure was 8,848 metres, while China had previously measured the rock summit at 8,844.43 metres.
Everest stands in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas, on the border between Nepal and Tibet, China. In Nepal it is called Sagarmatha, while Tibetans call it Chomolungma. The mountain was named in English after George Everest, a nineteenth-century Survey of India official.
The number is sometimes rounded to 8,849 metres. Measurements can vary slightly because of surveying methods, tectonic movement, and changes in summit snow and ice. Everest is the highest point above mean sea level, but Chimborazo in Ecuador is farther from Earth’s centre because Earth bulges at the equator.
