What is the name of the giant statue overlooking Rio de Janeiro from Mount Corcovado?
Answer
Christ the Redeemer
Answer
Christ the Redeemer
Christ the Redeemer is the giant statue overlooking Rio de Janeiro from Mount Corcovado.
The Art Deco statue depicts Jesus Christ with outstretched arms above the Brazilian city. It stands 30 metres tall, excluding its 8-metre pedestal, and was completed in 1931. The design was created by the Brazilian engineer Heitor da Silva Costa, with sculptural work by Paul Landowski.
Construction used reinforced concrete and a surface of soapstone tiles. The materials helped the statue withstand the mountain’s exposed conditions while allowing its curved form and detailed surface treatment.
Christ the Redeemer is a Roman Catholic monument, but it has become a broader symbol of Rio de Janeiro and Brazil. It is located inside Tijuca National Park. In 2007, it was named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World through a global public vote, although that list is separate from UNESCO’s official World Heritage designations.
