Which scientist proposed the theory of general relativity in 1915?

The story behind the answer

Albert Einstein proposed the theory of general relativity in 1915. The theory describes gravity not as an ordinary force but as the curvature of spacetime caused by matter and energy.

Einstein presented the field equations of general relativity to the Prussian Academy of Sciences in November 1915. The theory extended his special relativity of 1905, which applies to uniform motion, by incorporating accelerating frames and gravitation.

A celebrated early test came during the 1919 solar eclipse, when observations showed that starlight was deflected by the Sun’s gravity, broadly supporting Einstein’s prediction. General relativity later became essential for understanding black holes, gravitational waves, and the precise timing required by the Global Positioning System. It remains distinct from quantum mechanics, which describes subatomic phenomena.
