What is the nickname of Indiana Jones?

The story behind the answer

What is the nickname of Indiana Jones? Indy. The character’s full name is Dr. Henry Walton Jones Jr., but friends, colleagues, and audiences generally call him Indy. “Indiana” is itself a nickname rather than his birth name, and the shorter form “Indy” is used throughout the franchise as a familiar name for the archaeologist-adventurer.

The Last Crusade explains the origin of the name in its 1912 prologue and later dialogue. Henry Jones Sr. reveals that his son was named after the family dog, an Alaskan Malamute called Indiana. The explanation is also a playful reference to George Lucas’s own dog, which helped inspire the character’s name and later influenced the name Chewbacca in Star Wars.

“Junior” is another name heard in the films, especially when Henry Sr. addresses his son, but it is not the standard nickname asked for here. “Henry” is Indy’s given name, while “Indiana” and “Indy” are the identities by which he is best known. Harrison Ford portrays the adult Indy in the main film series, while other actors play younger versions in flashbacks and television stories.
