What is the nickname for the 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass?

The story behind the answer

The 17th hole at TPC Sawgrass is nicknamed the “Island Green.” It is the signature hole of the Stadium Course and one of the most recognizable par-3s in golf.

The hole measures about 137 yards, but its short distance is deceptive. The green is surrounded by water on nearly every side, with only a narrow access path connecting it to land. Technically, it is a peninsula rather than a true island, but the “Island Green” name has become universal.

The unusual design emerged partly by accident. During construction, sand was removed from the area, leaving a large crater. Alice Dye suggested turning the space into an island-style green, and the idea became the defining feature of Pete and Alice Dye’s Stadium Course.

The hole creates spectacular drama during The Players Championship. Wind can swirl among the surrounding trees, making club selection difficult, and thousands of balls end up in the water each year. The neighboring 18th hole then presents a very different challenge: a demanding finishing hole rather than a short target shot.
