Bulbasaur is National Pokédex number 001.
It is the first entry in the National Pokédex and one of the three Pokémon offered as a starter in Pokémon Red, Green, Blue, and their related versions. The other original starter choices are Charmander and Squirtle. Bulbasaur is classified as a dual Grass and Poison type.
The Pokédex describes Bulbasaur as a Pokémon born with a seed planted on its back. That seed grows as Bulbasaur develops, and the species evolves into Ivysaur at level 16, followed by Venusaur at level 32. Its design combines plant and amphibian-like features.
Bulbasaur’s number is sometimes confused with its regional placement or with the order in which players encounter Pokémon. The National Pokédex numbering system is broader: it preserves a franchise-wide index across generations. As the first numbered species, Bulbasaur appears at the beginning of official species lists even when a particular game offers a different starter.
