What is the national bird of the Caribbean island of Grenada?

The story behind the answer

The national bird of Grenada is the Grenada dove.

The Grenada dove, scientifically named Leptotila wellsi, is an endemic bird found only on Grenada. It is a small, ground-feeding dove with distinctive plumage and a limited range in dry forest and scrub habitats.

The species is critically endangered. Habitat loss, introduced predators and other pressures have reduced its population, and conservation work focuses on protecting suitable forest and improving public awareness. The bird became Grenada’s national bird in 1991.

The Grenada dove is not the same as the Caribbean’s better-known Zenaida dove, which has a much wider distribution. Its restricted range makes the Grenada dove especially important to the island’s natural heritage.
