What is the name of Walmart's sustainability initiative to reduce emissions?

The story behind the answer

Walmart’s sustainability initiative to reduce emissions is called Project Gigaton.

Walmart launched Project Gigaton in 2017 as a supplier-focused effort to reduce, avoid or sequester one billion metric tons of greenhouse-gas emissions from product supply chains by 2030. A gigaton equals one billion metric tons, which explains the initiative’s name.

Rather than focusing only on Walmart’s own stores and facilities, the program works across the company’s global value chain. Suppliers can address emissions through areas such as energy, product design, waste, packaging and nature. Walmart provides tools and reporting frameworks to help participating companies measure and reduce their impact.

Project Gigaton is sometimes confused with Walmart’s broader sustainability strategy or with “zero” branding. Project Zero is not the name of this emissions initiative. The program is especially notable because it targets Scope 3 emissions—the indirect emissions associated with suppliers and products—which can be much larger than a retailer’s direct operational footprint.
