Tolkien’s invented script used for many Elvish and other languages is called Tengwar.
The Tengwar, also called the Fëanorian characters, were created within Tolkien’s mythology by Fëanor. In the fictional history, the script was developed for writing languages of Middle-earth and later adapted for several different tongues. Its letter forms are built around consonant sounds, with vowel marks placed above or below the characters.
Tengwar is a writing system, not a language. This distinction matters because Tolkien also invented languages such as Quenya and Sindarin, which can be written using Tengwar. Tolkien used the script in illustrations, title pages, and inscriptions, making its forms part of the visual identity of his legendarium.
