Théoden’s horse in J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings is named Snowmane.
Snowmane is the great white horse ridden by Théoden, king of Rohan. The horse carries Théoden during the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, where the king leads the Rohirrim in a charge against the forces besieging Minas Tirith. Théoden is mortally wounded during the battle after Snowmane falls.
Tolkien gives the horse an important place in the king’s final scene. Théoden dies beneath or beside Snowmane, and the animal’s presence connects the king’s fate with Rohan’s celebrated horse culture. The name also reflects the visual imagery associated with Théoden’s white horse.
Snowmane is often confused with other famous horses in the books. Shadowfax belongs to Gandalf and is the swiftest of the great horses, while Brego is the horse that carries Aragorn in the film adaptation and related story tradition. Arod is ridden by Legolas, not Théoden.
