What is the name of the world tree?

The story behind the answer

What is the name of the world tree? Yggdrasil is the immense, sacred ash tree at the center of Norse cosmology.

The Poetic Edda and Prose Edda describe Yggdrasil as connecting or encompassing the worlds of the Norse cosmos. Its three great roots reach toward important wells or springs: Urðarbrunnr, Mímisbrunnr, and Hvergelmir. The gods gather beneath it for their assemblies, while creatures such as the dragon Níðhöggr, the squirrel Ratatoskr, and four stags inhabit or trouble the tree.

Yggdrasil is especially important because it links gods, humans, giants, the dead, and other beings within one cosmic structure. During Ragnarök, the tree trembles as the established order breaks down, though the surviving human pair Líf and Lífþrasir are associated with a wooded refuge sometimes connected by scholars with it.

A common mix-up is Askr, which means “ash tree” and appears in the phrase askr Yggdrasils. Mímameiðr and Læraðr may be related names in some interpretations, but Yggdrasil is the standard answer.
