The World of Light is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s large single-player adventure mode on Nintendo Switch. It begins after the fighters are overwhelmed by Galeem, a mysterious entity whose attack leaves most characters transformed into puppet fighters controlled by spirits.
Players guide Kirby across a map, rescuing fighters and collecting spirits that provide battle effects or represent characters, objects, and creatures from many video-game series. The mode combines exploration, event-style encounters, and conventional battles rather than presenting a linear sequence of ordinary matches.
World of Light is often confused with The Subspace Emissary, the cinematic adventure mode from Super Smash Bros. Brawl on Wii. It is also distinct from Classic Mode, which gives individual fighters shorter character-based routes, and from the Spirits Board, which is a separate way to challenge spirit battles.
Super Smash Bros. Ultimate was released for Nintendo Switch on December 7, 2018, and its roster ultimately grew to 89 playable fighters when echoes and downloadable characters are counted under the game’s published roster presentation.
