What is the name of the wizarding sport invented by J.K. Rowling in Harry Potter?

The story behind the answer

Quidditch is the wizarding sport invented by J.K. Rowling for Harry Potter.

In the books, Quidditch is played by two teams of seven players flying on broomsticks. Players score with the Quaffle through three opposing hoops, while Beaters use Bludgers and the Seeker tries to catch the Golden Snitch. Catching the Snitch usually ends the match and awards 150 points.

The game first appears at Hogwarts in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, where Harry becomes the Gryffindor Seeker. Rowling has said the game’s name was inspired by a real-life word game and that the rules developed while she was writing the series. The sport combines recognizable team-sport ideas with deliberately magical elements.

Quidditch is sometimes confused with the real-world sport later developed by Harry Potter fans. That sport was originally called Muggle Quidditch and was renamed Quadball in 2022 by the International Quadball Association.
