Quidditch is the wizarding sport featured in J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter books.
It is played by two teams of seven players on broomsticks. Players use four balls: one Quaffle, two Bludgers, and one Golden Snitch. Chasers handle the Quaffle, Beaters defend their team from Bludgers, the Keeper guards the hoops, and the Seeker pursues the Snitch.
In the original rules, catching the Golden Snitch normally awards 150 points and ends the match. That scoring rule explains why a team can catch the Snitch and still lose if its opponent has built a sufficiently large lead.
Quidditch is not the same as the other magical games mentioned in the novels. Gobstones is a separate game, wizard chess is a board game, and broom racing is not the organized team sport played at Hogwarts. Rowling later published Quidditch Through the Ages as a companion work.
