What is the name of the well where the Norns dwell?

The story behind the answer

The Norns dwell beside Urðarbrunnr, the Well of Urðr, beneath Yggdrasil.

Urðarbrunnr is one of the sacred wells associated with the roots of Yggdrasil, the world tree. In the Prose Edda, the three principal Norns—Urðr, Verðandi, and Skuld—live in a hall near the well. They shape the lives and destinies of humans, making the well closely connected with fate.

The Norns also care for Yggdrasil. Each day they draw water from Urðarbrunnr and mix it with the mud around the well before pouring it over the tree. This preserves Yggdrasil and prevents its branches from decaying. The well’s water is described as exceptionally holy, and two swans are said to live there.

A common mix-up is to choose Mímisbrunnr, another famous well beneath Yggdrasil. Mímisbrunnr is associated with Mímir and wisdom, while Hvergelmir is linked with Niflheim and the origins of several rivers. Bifröst, meanwhile, is the rainbow bridge traveled by the gods, not a well.
