What is the name of the wardrobe-maker in C.S. Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe?

The story behind the answer

The wardrobe-maker in C.S. Lewis’s The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe is Professor Kirke.

Professor Digory Kirke is the elderly scholar who owns the country house where the Pevensie children stay during the Second World War. The children discover Narnia through a wardrobe in one of the rooms. Kirke later explains that Lucy’s account may be credible, even when the other children doubt her.

The wardrobe itself is connected to Digory’s earlier adventure in The Magician’s Nephew, which was published later but is set earlier in the fictional chronology. In that story, a young Digory helps bring the wardrobe’s magical history into being.

Professor Kirke is sometimes confused with Uncle Andrew, another older scholar in Narnia. Uncle Andrew appears in The Magician’s Nephew and is Digory’s uncle. Mr. Tumnus and Mr. Beaver are Narnian characters rather than the wardrobe’s human owner.
