What is the name of the villainous explorer in Up? The villainous explorer is Charles Muntz. Carl first encounters Muntz as a child and idolizes him as a celebrated adventurer, but the elderly Carl later discovers that his childhood hero has become dangerously obsessed with capturing a rare bird.

Muntz travels to Paradise Falls aboard his airship and commands a pack of dogs equipped with translating collars. His original reputation collapses after scientists dismiss the enormous bird skeleton he presents as a fraud. Determined to prove himself, he spends years hunting for a living specimen and treats anyone who might find it as a rival.

Muntz is voiced by Christopher Plummer. The character serves as a dark reflection of Carl: both men are shaped by old dreams and loss, but Muntz allows obsession to consume him. The other choices are characters or animals from the film. Alpha is one of Muntz’s dogs, Russell is the young Wilderness Explorer traveling with Carl, and Carl Fredricksen is the protagonist.
