What is the name of the trucking entrepreneur who invented the intermodal container?

The story behind the answer

The trucking entrepreneur who invented the modern intermodal container was Malcolm McLean. His standardized container transformed freight by allowing cargo to move between trucks, ships, and trains without being unpacked.

McLean was born in North Carolina in 1913 and founded McLean Trucking Company in 1935. Watching dockworkers laboriously move individual packages from trucks to ships, he pursued a system in which a sealed cargo box could be transferred intact. In 1956, the converted tanker Ideal X carried 58 containers from Newark, New Jersey, to Houston, demonstrating the commercial potential of containerization.

McLean did not invent every earlier cargo box or the general idea of transferring freight between transport modes. His major contribution was developing a practical, standardized, economically scalable system, including the shipping company Sea-Land Service. International standards later made containers compatible across global carriers and ports.

The result was faster loading, less cargo theft and damage, lower handling costs, and shorter transit times. John W. Snyder, Sam Walton, and Robert Stevens were not the trucking entrepreneur associated with this breakthrough.
