Norris Trophy
Answer
Norris Trophy
The trophy for the NHL’s best defenseman is the James Norris Memorial Trophy, commonly called the Norris Trophy. It is awarded annually to the defense player judged to show the greatest all-round ability during the regular season.
The award was first presented after the 1953–54 season and is named for James E. Norris, the longtime owner of the Detroit Red Wings. Members of the Professional Hockey Writers’ Association select finalists and vote on the winner. The award recognizes much more than scoring: defensive reliability, puck movement, physical play, leadership, and overall impact can all influence the result.
Boston Bruins legend Bobby Orr holds the record with eight Norris Trophy wins, including eight consecutive awards from 1968 through 1975. The Vezina Trophy is the major NHL award for goaltending, the Selke Trophy honors the best defensive forward, and the Hart Trophy recognizes the league’s most valuable player.
