Answer
The Claret Jug
Answer
The Claret Jug
The trophy awarded to the winner of the Open Championship is the Claret Jug. Its official name is the Golf Champion Trophy, although its distinctive wine-jug shape and reddish-brown color made “Claret Jug” the name used by golfers and fans.
The trophy was created after Young Tom Morris won the original Challenge Belt outright by taking three consecutive Open titles from 1868 through 1870. The next championship was not held in 1871, and three organizing clubs agreed in 1872 to commission a replacement silver trophy. Each club contributed £10 toward its cost.
The Claret Jug was not ready for the 1872 presentation, even though Young Tom Morris’s name was engraved as the first winner. Tom Kidd became the first champion actually presented with it, in 1873. The original trophy has been displayed at the Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews since 1928. Since 1928, winners receive a replica to keep, while the main trophy returns for the next championship.
