What is the name of the Tolstoy family estate where Leo Tolstoy founded his school?

The story behind the answer

The Tolstoy family estate where Leo Tolstoy founded his school was Yasnaya Polyana.

Yasnaya Polyana, meaning “Clear Glade,” lies south of Moscow near Tula. Tolstoy was born there, spent much of his life there, wrote major works there, and was buried on the estate after his death. It became both a home and a place where he tested ideas about education, farming, morality, and social organization.

In 1859, Tolstoy opened a school for peasant children at Yasnaya Polyana. He believed that lessons should respect children’s freedom and curiosity, an approach that contrasted with the strict methods common in many schools of his time.

The estate is sometimes confused with Tolstoy’s Moscow residence in the Khamovniki district. Khamovniki was an important urban home, but Yasnaya Polyana was the family estate most closely associated with his lifelong rural life and literary work.
