What is the name of the third novel in C.S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy?

The story behind the answer

That Hideous Strength is the third novel in C.S. Lewis’s Space Trilogy.

Published in 1945, That Hideous Strength follows Out of the Silent Planet and Perelandra. Unlike the first two novels, which focus heavily on the planets Malacandra and Perelandra, the third story is set mainly on Earth. Its plot centers on the apparently scientific organization N.I.C.E. and its attempt to reshape humanity through technocratic power.

The novel combines science fiction, fantasy, satire, and Christian themes. Lewis drew part of its intellectual background from concerns about scientific materialism, centralized authority, and the misuse of technology. The title comes from a line associated with the medieval legend of St. Michael’s Mount.

Some readers call the sequence the Ransom Trilogy, after its protagonist, Elwin Ransom. The three novels are connected by characters and ideas, but each has a different setting and tone. That Hideous Strength is the concluding volume.
