The talking cat who joins Shrek in Shrek 2 is named Puss in Boots.

Puss begins the film as an assassin hired by King Harold to eliminate Shrek. After Shrek defeats him, Puss changes sides and becomes one of Shrek’s closest companions. His name and costume come from the traditional European fairy tale about a clever cat who wears boots and helps his master.

Antonio Banderas voices Puss in the Shrek films, giving the character a dramatic, Spanish-accented style inspired partly by swashbuckling film heroes. Puss combines swordsmanship, theatrical confidence and an ability to appear harmless when he wants sympathy.

The character became popular enough to headline the 2011 spin-off film Puss in Boots. He also returns in later Shrek stories and remains one of DreamWorks Animation’s best-known supporting characters.
