Andúril is the sword reforged from the shards of Narsil for Aragorn in Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings.
Narsil was the sword of Elendil, who used it against Sauron at the end of the Second Age. Elendil was killed, but his son Isildur cut the One Ring from Sauron’s hand with the broken blade. The shards were preserved as a hereditary symbol of the heirs of Isildur.
Before Aragorn travels on the Paths of the Dead, the sword is reforged by the Elven smiths of Rivendell. Aragorn receives the new weapon under the name Andúril, meaning “Flame of the West.” Its reforging identifies him with the kingship of Gondor and Arnor and recalls the history of his ancestors.
Andúril is often confused with other famous Tolkien swords. Glamdring belongs to Gandalf, Sting is Bilbo’s and later Frodo’s short sword, and Orcrist was carried by Thorin Oakenshield. These weapons are distinct in both ownership and history.
