What is the name of the steward of Gondor?

The steward of Gondor is Lord Denethor. More precisely, Tolkien’s character is Denethor II, the 26th and last ruling Steward of Gondor before Aragorn restores the kingdom’s monarchy.

Denethor rules from Minas Tirith during the War of the Ring. He is the father of Boromir and Faramir, and his office exists because Gondor’s royal line has been absent for centuries. Although he is not king, Denethor holds enormous authority and is responsible for defending Gondor against Sauron.

A common mix-up is confusing Denethor with Faramir, who later becomes Steward after Aragorn’s coronation. Elendil and Isildur were earlier kings connected with Gondor, while Denethor belongs to the hereditary line of Stewards. In Peter Jackson’s film adaptation, Denethor is played by John Noble.
