What is the name of the snowboarding race where four riders compete together on a course?

The story behind the answer

Snowboard cross is the snowboarding race in which four riders compete together on a course. Riders start simultaneously and navigate turns, rollers, jumps, and other terrain features while racing toward the finish.

The discipline is also called boardercross. It differs from parallel giant slalom, where two riders race side by side on separate courses marked by gates. Snowboard cross emphasizes tactical positioning as well as speed, because contact, overtaking, and line choice can determine the result.

The Olympic event uses heats. Riders first establish rankings in qualification, then advance through elimination rounds. The fastest finishers in each heat move forward until the final determines the medals.

Snowboard cross became an Olympic medal event at the 2006 Turin Winter Games. It is related to motocross in its mass-start format and its use of jumps and banked turns, but it is raced on snowboards.
