What is the name of the ski-jumping technique in which the skis form a V in flight?

The story behind the answer

The ski-jumping technique in which the skis form a V in flight is called V-style.

In V-style, the jumper separates the ski tips and angles the tails closer together, creating a V shape when viewed from above or from the front. The position improves aerodynamic lift compared with the older parallel-ski technique and became standard in elite ski jumping.

Swedish jumper Jan Boklöv is widely credited with pioneering the technique in competition during the 1980s. Judges initially marked down his unusual style, but its performance benefits became impossible to ignore. The technique was later accepted and adopted throughout the sport.

V-style should not be confused with the telemark landing. Telemark refers to the landing position, in which one ski is placed ahead of the other with bent knees. A jumper can use V-style during flight and then complete a telemark landing. These are separate parts of a jump.
