The ship that transports the expedition to Skull Island in King Kong (2005) is the Venture. The tramp steamer carries filmmaker Carl Denham, actress Ann Darrow, screenwriter Jack Driscoll and the film crew toward the mysterious island.
The story is set in 1933, during the Great Depression. Denham tells Captain Englehorn and the crew that they are heading toward Singapore, but he secretly intends to reach Skull Island and shoot his picture there. The Venture sails from the Dutch East Indies, with the voyage becoming increasingly dangerous as Denham’s deception is exposed and the ship enters heavy fog.
The Venture eventually runs aground near Skull Island, where the expedition encounters hostile islanders, prehistoric creatures and Kong. The ship is also central to the film’s ending: after Kong is captured and taken to New York, the expedition’s vessel remains part of the larger escape and return storyline. The name is sometimes mixed up with the Pequod, a whaling ship from Moby-Dick, or the Nautilus from Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea.
