Wan Nao is the name of Songkran’s second day, observed on April 14.
In the traditional three-day sequence, April 13 is Wan Sangkhan Lohng, a day associated with preparation and cleansing. April 14 is Wan Nao, the transitional day before the new year formally begins. April 15 is Wan Thaloeng Sok, the first day of the new year in the traditional sequence.
Wan Nao is traditionally connected with preparing food, offerings, and other items for merit-making. Families may also visit temples, clean homes, and get ready for ceremonies involving elders and Buddha images. Modern public celebrations often blend these customs with large water festivities.
The names can be confused because different Thai calendars and local traditions may describe Songkran’s days somewhat differently. Wan Nao, however, is the standard name commonly given to April 14 in descriptions of the traditional Songkran calendar.
