What is the name of the seagull in The Little Mermaid?

The story behind the answer

What is the name of the seagull in The Little Mermaid? The seagull is named Scuttle.

Scuttle is Ariel’s friend and her self-appointed expert on human objects. Ariel brings items from sunken ships and the surface to him, believing his explanations will help her understand human life. His confidence is much greater than his knowledge: he famously calls a fork a “dinglehopper” and a smoking pipe a “snarfblatt.”

Although Scuttle’s information is usually wrong, he remains useful to Ariel. Near the end of the film, he discovers that Ursula is disguised as Vanessa and alerts Ariel, helping expose the deception before Eric’s wedding. His comic mistakes therefore become part of the story’s solution.

Scuttle was voiced by comedian Buddy Hackett in the 1989 animated film. The character also appears in later Little Mermaid productions, although the 2023 live-action adaptation changes Scuttle into a female northern gannet voiced by Awkwafina. That remake is why some newer descriptions differ from the original film.
