The script called Tengwar is J.R.R. Tolkien’s writing system known as the Tengwar.
Tengwar is a constructed script used in Tolkien’s legendarium to write several languages, including Quenya and Sindarin. The word tengwar is Quenya for “letters.” Tolkien designed the system as part of his extensive linguistic work, giving it an internal history rather than treating it as a simple decorative alphabet.
The Tengwar uses distinctive letter forms called tehtar in some writing modes. These marks can represent vowels, while the main characters generally represent consonants. Different languages and writing traditions can use the script in different modes, so the same visual system is adaptable across Middle-earth.
Tengwar is often confused with Cirth. Cirth is another Tolkien script, made from angular characters and associated especially with the Dwarves, although other peoples also used it. Sarati is an earlier script in Tolkien’s mythology, while Angerthas refers to expanded runic arrangements related to the Cirth.
