The school winter dance the kids attend in Stranger Things is called the Snow Ball. It takes place at Hawkins Middle School near the end of the second season, after Eleven returns and helps defeat the Mind Flayer’s influence.
The Snow Ball gives the characters a rare moment of normal teenage life after the season’s supernatural crises. Mike attends with Eleven, Lucas dances with Max, and Dustin arrives after Steve gives him advice about fitting in. The dance becomes especially memorable because Eleven and Mike share their first kiss there.
The event is sometimes casually called the “Snowball” or the “Snow Ball dance,” but “Snow Ball” is the name used in the show. The finale also contrasts the brightly decorated real-world gym with the ominous Upside Down version of Hawkins Middle School, creating one of the series’ most recognizable visual transitions.
