Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry
Harry Potter attends Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in J.K. Rowling’s novels.
Hogwarts is a fictional boarding school for young witches and wizards in Scotland. Harry receives his acceptance letter shortly before his eleventh birthday and begins his first year in Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. The school becomes the main setting for most of the series.
Students are placed into four houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Harry, Ron Weasley, and Hermione Granger are sorted into Gryffindor, while Draco Malfoy joins Slytherin. The houses compete for the House Cup and also shape many of the friendships and rivalries in the story.
Hogwarts is sometimes confused with other wizarding schools mentioned in the books, including Beauxbatons Academy of Magic and Durmstrang Institute. Those institutions appear most prominently during the Triwizard Tournament in Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.
