What is the name of the region in Pokémon Gold and Silver?

The story behind the answer

The region in Pokémon Gold and Silver is Johto. It is the main setting of the second-generation Pokémon games, which were released for the Game Boy Color in 1999. Johto lies west of the Kanto region from Pokémon Red, Blue, and Yellow, and the two regions are connected in the games.

Johto’s design draws heavily on Japan’s Kansai and Tōkai regions. Its towns include traditional architecture, shrines, towers, and historical landmarks, giving the area a more old-fashioned atmosphere than Kanto. The player begins with a choice of Chikorita, Cyndaquil, or Totodile and must earn eight Johto Gym Badges before challenging the Pokémon League.

A common mix-up is answering Kanto because Gold and Silver eventually allow players to revisit it. Kanto is the post-game region, while Johto is the region where the main adventure begins. Pokémon Crystal, HeartGold, and SoulSilver also use Johto as their primary setting.
