Kanto is the region explored in the original Pokémon Red and Green games.
The player begins in Pallet Town and travels through Kanto while collecting Gym Badges, confronting Team Rocket, and attempting to become Pokémon League Champion. The region contains eight Gyms and landmarks such as Viridian Forest, Mt. Moon, the Safari Zone, and the Indigo Plateau.
Kanto also contains the first-generation Pokédex of 151 Pokémon. Its geography and characters became the template for later Pokémon regions, although subsequent games introduced new maps and regional species.
The name Kanto was borrowed from a real region of Japan surrounding Tokyo. The Pokémon anime also began in Kanto, which helped make locations such as Pallet Town and Viridian City familiar to viewers. Kanto later returned in Pokémon Gold, Silver, and Crystal as an explorable post-game area.
