What is the standard deck size in the Pokémon Trading Card Game?

The story behind the answer

A standard Pokémon Trading Card Game deck contains 60 cards.

Players use those cards to battle, placing one Pokémon in the Active position and additional Pokémon on the Bench. Energy cards generally power attacks, while Trainer cards provide effects such as drawing cards, switching Pokémon, or altering the battle.

Deck construction is not simply about reaching 60 cards. Official rules also limit how many copies of most cards may be included and require players to follow the format's current legality rules. Basic Energy cards are treated differently from most named cards.

The 60-card format has been part of the game's identity since its early competitive structure. The Pokémon TCG was first published in Japan in October 1996, several months after the original Game Boy games launched. Its worldwide growth eventually led to organized tournaments and annual World Championships.
