Al Mualim is the hidden blade instructor and mentor of Altaïr in the original Assassin’s Creed. He leads the Masyaf-based Assassin Brotherhood and trains Altaïr in the order’s methods.
The game presents Al Mualim as a powerful teacher who disciplines Altaïr after a failed mission at Solomon’s Temple. Altaïr is stripped of his rank and equipment, then sent to eliminate a series of targets across the Levant as part of his path toward redemption.
Al Mualim’s name is an honorific meaning “the teacher” or “the master.” The character is based partly on the historical Rashid ad-Din Sinan, the leader of the Syrian Nizari Ismaili community, although the game changes history for its fictional narrative.
Al Mualim should not be confused with Malik Al-Sayf, Altaïr’s fellow Assassin and later bureau leader in Jerusalem. The original game gradually questions Al Mualim’s motives, making his mentorship central to its larger conflict over power and control.
