The protagonist of Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas is Carl Johnson.

Known by his nickname CJ, Carl Johnson is a veteran member of the Grove Street Families gang in Los Santos. He returns to his home city in 1992 after spending five years in Liberty City, following the death of his mother, Beverly Johnson. His return draws him back into gang conflict, police corruption, betrayal, and a struggle to rebuild Grove Street's influence.

Carl's journey eventually takes him beyond Los Santos to the other major cities of the fictional state of San Andreas: San Fierro and Las Venturas. This broad setting is inspired by California and Nevada, with Los Santos drawing particularly from Los Angeles, San Fierro from San Francisco, and Las Venturas from Las Vegas.
