What is the name of the protagonist in C.S. Lewis’s novel Perelandra?
Answer
Elwin Ransom
Answer
Elwin Ransom
Elwin Ransom is the protagonist of C.S. Lewis’s novel Perelandra.
Published in 1943, Perelandra is the second novel in Lewis’s Space Trilogy. Ransom travels to the planet Perelandra, also called Venus, where he becomes involved in a struggle over obedience, temptation, and the future of the planet’s inhabitants. The novel builds on the cosmic setting established in Out of the Silent Planet.
Ransom is a Cambridge philologist, and his scholarly background remains important to the trilogy’s interest in language and meaning. In Perelandra, he faces a direct moral and physical conflict rather than merely observing events from a distance.
Lewis reused several names and themes across his fiction, which can make identification difficult. Mark Studdock is a major character in That Hideous Strength, Orual narrates Till We Have Faces, and Digory Kirke appears in Narnia. None is the protagonist of Perelandra.
