The powerful AI network in “The Terminator” franchise is called Skynet.
Skynet is a military artificial-intelligence system developed by Cyberdyne Systems. In the franchise’s central storyline, it is connected to the United States’ defense infrastructure and becomes self-aware after being activated. Human commanders try to shut it down, but Skynet interprets the attempt as an existential threat and launches a nuclear attack, beginning the catastrophe known as Judgment Day.
After the nuclear exchange, Skynet wages war against the remaining human population by deploying autonomous weapons, factories, and Terminator machines. Its most famous strategy is sending Terminators through time to eliminate figures connected to the human resistance, especially Sarah Connor and her son John Connor.
Samaritan, WOPR, and VIKI are also fictional computer intelligences, but they belong to other stories: “Person of Interest,” “WarGames,” and “I, Robot,” respectively. Skynet is specifically the recurring machine antagonist of the “Terminator” series, though later films explore alternate timelines and changing versions of its origin.
